year end review and Holiday Greetings
Posted 20 December 2019, 2:57 pm NST
As the holiday season approaches and we welcome a new year, it gives all of us time to reflect on the challenges and opportunities of 2019
This year we have welcomed opportunities to make improvements in our town, always with the health and safety of residents as our priority.
We have provided alternate access for residents who live at the beach, thereby having no future need for vehicles to drive on the beach, or to clear snow in the winter. In 2020, in partnership with Healthy Waters Labrador, we will develop a plan that will allow all to enjoy the beach safely.
We completed one year of wastewater meter monitoring in September, and in November tender was awarded to engineering firm WOOD, who, in collaboration with the town, will determine the best option for wastewater treatment, thereby diverting wastewater from entering Lake Melville. This study will be completed in April 2020.
We have made some improvements to the rink, but more to come. We did not have enough boards to complete the whole rink, and because mother nature couldn't wait, we improvised using plywood. But the good news is 4 Wing Goose Bay will be donating the remainder of boards, top plate, and kick boards, so next year we will have a "top notch" rink.
We have created a Look Out park up Sunday Hill and improved some green areas in town, more to be done in 2020.
The pumphouse project is completed, and we would like to thank everyone for their patience with the inconvenience of the boil water advisory. One more lab test will be done on Monday and at that time we are hoping the chlorine levels will allow the advisory to be lifted.
A new lift station at Little Lake has been tendered, and construction will start in spring (finally)!
Paving work will be done in 2020, this was to be done in 2019 but no contractor available, and unfortunately some things are out of our control. There is a lot of paving work being done in Labrador in the upcoming year, which should see the project complete, and give us a more competitive bidding price.
We are awaiting funding approval for water and sewer upgrades for Paddon Rd. and Montague St. in 2020.
The 2020 budget is balanced at $686,941.28 and was approved by Council on December 11th. We are pleased to let you know that there will be no rate or tax increases for 2020. The budget and rate listings will be on townofnwr.ca website after approval by the Department of Municipal Affairs.
Although the fiscal and physical work of the Town in 2019 did not come without its challenges, it also gave us a great opportunity to serve you, and we look forward to many more opportunities in 2020.
We would like to thank all our great volunteers in Town who keep things moving. New residents who would like more information on what our Town has to offer, can contact Town Office 497-8533
May the peace and joy of family and friends surround you throughout the Season and in the New Year.
