Well spring is springing! With that in mind, we ask all to closely watch the changing conditions while out travelling. As we have learned more in the past year than ever, things can change fast, from day to day. With the snow season behind us, we thank our Groomer Operators, Paul and Corey, and our Heavy Equipment Operator Junior, for getting us nicely through another winter.
We would like to welcome residents who have recently moved to our town. We are working on a welcoming package, but in it's absence, please feel free to call or email the office for any information you may need regarding services and the many volunteer organizations in our community. We would like to extend best wishes to Constables Deluney, Burgess, and Ash who will be leaving this summer. Thank you for your service in North West River.
Tender is out for paving projects in Town. The road work that was first proposed in 2017 will now encompass much more work with a cost of just over 900,000.00. We are extra hopeful this year that we get a good price because of the increased scope of work, as well as other roadwork being done in Central Labrador.
We are working on a project budget, and sourcing additional funds to continue working on improvements at the beach. Many thanks to NuntuKavut Community Council for $45000.00 funding to get things started.
We continue to work on identifying the best wastewater diversion system for our town, and ensuring we are meeting the federal wastewater effluent reporting regulations. We just recently started working with ACWA (Advancing Canadian Wastewater Assets) and University of Calgary on a research and development project to enhance wetlands in a northern climate which will not only be of benefit to North West River, but all northern rural communities in Canada.
Work continues with the Resource Recovery committee (waste diversion). As with anything, it starts with small steps. Starting this week, recyclable beverage containers can be placed separately next to household garbage in a box or clear bag, it will be picked up on regular garbage day. When snow is gone, we will have an enclosed area for drop off as well. Fling it nets, to cover garbage, while waiting pick up, are available for at the town office free of charge. Wheeled garbage containers will be available to purchase, in the next couple of weeks.
We would like to thank all residents who have paid their 2021 taxes, the due date is April 30th. A reminder to those who have not paid yet, to ensure all is paid in full by June 30 to avoid water disconnection. Payment can be made by email transfer, credit card by phone or cheque. If you wish to pay in person, please call-in advance to ensure your privacy and social distancing is maintained. The next Regular Council meeting will be Thursday April 22 at 7:00 pm. Anyone wishing to attend by phone can do so by calling town office by 4:30 Thursday for the call-in information.
We extend congratulations to CRB on the opening of CRB Supermarket and Riverside Restaurant, we wish them many years of success, serving the community.
It is nice to see pet owners keeping their four-legged friends safe. Residents with a new pet, or newcomers to town, can stop by for a registration tag. Its free, and you could win a prize. We continue to meet regularly with band management at Sheshatshiu, regarding animal control and are working together with SPCA on solutions for the greater problem of stray dogs not spayed or neutered. We ask that no resident feed dog(s) that they do not own. This only exasperates the problem. The winner for the doggie prize this time is "Marley Saunders" (owner Brenda). Stop by the office to pick up Marley's prize.
This week is National Volunteer Week. We are fortunate in North West River to have many organizations for such a small town. It shows pride and generosity of spirit, and it would not be possible without volunteers. For that, we thank each and everyone of you!
Thanks to those residents, who may not work within an organization, but continues to be community minded and taking action to make our Town a better place.
When the weather warms up, we hope to have an outside event to recognize each of you. As you know, Mayor Dave Keiser and Ken Baikie is no longer working with us. We have thanked them personally, and will show special thanks for their service, at that time as well.
Until next time, stay safe!
