The Town of North West River mourns the loss of Happy Valley-Goose Bay Mayor, and former MHA, John Hickey.
John had many ties to our town, through friendships and professional colleagues. It was very common for John to drive down from his Happy Valley-Goose Bay home over the years to visit North West River.
He supported our community causes and, as Mayor of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, he sought for regional cooperation with North West River at the municipal level.
He was known to call North West River "the jewel of Labrador."
John was known as a fighter for all of Labrador during his decades in municipal and provincial politics. He was also known for his big personality and his warm heart.
Today, our flags at the Town Office stand at half mast in his honour.
Our sincerest condolences go out to John's friends and family during this difficult time.

The Town has begun enforcement of it's Road "Right-of-Way" ownership. A map of the Town, with the Right-of-Way measurements for the individual roads in town is now available under Town Minutes and Other Documents on our website. These measurements are what determine fence and construction setbacks within the Town.
Town staff will be conducting surveys as time and resources allow, in order to make sure Town by-laws are being adhered to. Violators will be contacted by the Town and enforcement measures will be undertaken as necessary.

"The Producers and crew of Last Stop Garage want to thank the residents of North West River and Sheshshatshiu for their co-operation during our filming yesterday. We greatly appreciate the understanding of the motorists during the two short traffic stoppages. We were able to complete the filming required and we have no current plans for further filming along the highway, on in town that will require any traffic stoppages. Thank you for your support!"
